I am a food writer often in a social justice frame. I have been aware for some time of the conditions of seasonal workers in the agricultural sector but had not followed it up to any depth. Recently I came across two reports on the working conditions for a part of that sector – those who work under the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme. They painted a grim picture of a scheme in need of urgent reform. Their findings are summarised in this article.
